Laura Novak, Director and Physical Therapist at Excellcare has merged with Maximum Rehabilitation Services and is now located in Evergreen Park. Maximum offers the specialty of Mckenzie Therapy (MDT), a proven method applied to neck, back, and extremities and preferred by doctors.
Laura Novak, PT, DPT, Cert MDT, and clinical director of Maximum Rehab, as well as Vishakha Shah, PT, DPT, Cert MDT and clinic VP practice this method. MDT is a way of evaluating a patient using certain movements to expose a therapy diagnosis and treatment plan. The unique thing about the MDT method is that it is built to empower the patient. It can be applied to neck pain, back pain, and even extremity pain and dysfunction.
Upon exam, the patient performs different motions, and the patient’s response drives a diagnosis and treatment plan. The patient’s response is then classified into one of three categories. Derangement, Dysfunction, or Postural syndrome. From there, treatments are based on active movements in which the patient is able to become independent in their care.
This method utilizes very detailed questions and interactions with the therapist, and the treatment for each patient is individualized. The patient is always able to continue some portion of self treatment, which is beneficial on days when the patient is not coming to physical therapy.
Studies have shown Mckenzie Therapy to be a superior method for pain relief as compared to manual therapy alone for patients with cervical and lumbar diagnosis.
